Breathing new life into a design of 1966

When Miyazaki undertook the reintroduction of this historic piece, they were entrusted with three invaluable sources: • The original 1-seater Universe Sofa• A revised prototype• And a detailed drawing of the 2-seater Instead of choosing one version as the foundation, Miyazaki took an unconventional approach - combining the best elements of each. The revised prototype informed the dimensions, the drawing offered precise detailing, and the original model contributed the elegant form of the backrest. While the original design already possessed a quiet brilliance, Miyazaki recognized an opportunity to refine and enhance. The transition point in the backrest, particularly at the corners, lacked the fluidity that defines true comfort and visual harmony. With an uncompromising eye for detail, the Miyazaki team redrew the life-size sketches - again and again - until the curvature felt effortless and true to Kristiansen’s design language.

A meeting of minds across generations

This year, Miyazaki traveled to Denmark to meet the now 96-year-old Kai Kristiansen in person. Together, they reviewed and fine-tuned the cushions, ensuring both the aesthetic and tactile experience met the highest expectations. Despite his age, Kristiansen remains deeply engaged and emotionally invested in his designs, underscoring the enduring importance he places on craftsmanship and presentation. Miyazaki shows equal respect for their collaborators, viewing every detail as a shared responsibility.

From June 2025, the Universe Sofa will be available for ordering through our official Miyazaki retailers. The sofa is offered in two flexible configurations: armless, or with a single arm to suit individual layouts (left & right).

Will you be among the new generation to enjoy the Universe Sofa?
