“DAEN” is the Japanese translation for “ellipse”.The name has been chosen because the structure of this chair is made from elliptical cross-sections.The rigorous continuation of the shape , the ellipse, is fully in line with the Japanese architectural philosophy in which beams and columns preferably also take the same shape. The twisted finger joints are the result of this continuous elliptical structure and reflect the craftmanship of both the designer and manufacturer. The ellipse has a wide and a narrow side. The wide side supports the back and elbows whilst the narrow sides makes the chair look lighter.Although the chair was born from a clear concept DAEN was very difficult to make.Several methods of construction has been tried and more than 20 prototypes have been made during a 12 year process.Never before a chair has taken the Miyazaki Chair Factory so much time and effort to develop.
